7th Floor Media Works With Students from Across Canada and Romania at the Historica Youthlinks Summit to Publish Web-zine

VANCOUVER April 11, 2004

7th Floor Media is proud to be a part of Historica Foundation's inaugural YouthLinks Summit at the Université de Moncton from May 11-17, working with 99 students from across Canada and Romania exploring the theme, The Clash of Cultures. Student delegates, from grades 10 to 12 will examine the history of Champlain's voyages, exploration and settlement as well as the expulsion of the Acadians as a starting point for discussion of current issues in Canada and the global community. Discussion will use the 7th Floor Media-designed learning/teaching module, Champlain in Acadia as a base and will focus on four key questions from First Nations, Acadian-Maritime and international perspectives:

Who benefits from globalization?
Was the meeting of the French and the Mi'kmaq collaboration or exploitation?
In a time of crisis, do governments have the right to erode human rights?
Do clashes inevitably result in conflict or can profound differences be peacefully resolved?

Throughout the week, in workshop settings, students will deliberate the issues and take on a leadership role in proposing ways in which they can address the clash of cultures in their schools, their communities and among decision-makers. Students will craft their responses using a number of different media including the Internet, where the 7th Floor Media team will work with students to produce a web-zine.

Designed and maintained by 7th Floor Media, Historica YouthLinks is an on-line learning program linking high school students in Canada with their peers around the world to examine historical events that continue to affect our lives.
